Steps to Follow When Caring for a Patient with Possible Covid-19 Exposure

In preparation for your visit to a patient that has a Covid-19 exposure, plan on the items that you will be taking into the patients home and prepare these items to maintain safety.

  • Take minimal equipment in the patient’s home.

  • Place you assessment tools such as thermometers, BP cuff, etc in separate plastic bags. Use this equipment in the plastic bag to assess your patient. If you take your ipad in the home, place this is a plastic bag as well and use within the bag.

  • Call your patient from your car and perform as much of your assessment via the phone as you can.

  • Instruct patient/caregiver to place a trash bag outside the entrance of the home

  • Use your hand sanitizer

  • Take your PPE to the patient’s entrance way and don according to proper protocol

      • Hand hygiene

      • Shoe Covers

      • Gown

      • Hair Cover

      • Mask

      • Goggles/Face Shield

      • Gloves

  • Enter the patient’s home in full PPE.

  • Place a face mask on the patient if one is not in place

      • Assess if the patient is stable enough to receive care at home.

      • Assess if there are appropriate caregivers available at home to assist in the care of the patient.

      • Assess if there is a separate bedroom where the patient can recover without sharing immediate space with others.

      • Assess if the patient/caregiver has resources for access to food and other necessities

      • Assess if the patient and other household members have access to appropriate, recommended personal protective equipment (at a minimum, gloves and facemask) and are capable of adhering to precautions recommended as part of home care or isolation (e.g., respiratory hygiene and cough etiquette, hand hygiene)



  • Complete assessment of patient and provided education and interventions according to patient’s plan of care.

  • At the end of visit, leave patient room in full PPE, close bedroom door behind you, and exit the building.

  • Doff PPE at the exit of the home according to proper protocol

      • Remove shoe covers

      • Gown and gloves together

      • Perform Hand Hygiene

      • Remove Goggles/Face Shield

      • Hair Cover

      • Mask

      • Perform Hand Hygiene
